Pitra Dosh, or Pitru Dosh, according to Vedic astrology, is a defect that occurs later in one's life and can be demoralizing. It is most commonly caused by the movement of planets, and for reasons such as bad deeds of ancestors in an earlier life, unfulfilled parental desires, or a sudden and unnatural death of a relative at an early age.
Pitra Dosha occurs if any ancestors — up to the 7th generation on the father's side and up to the 4th generation on the mother's side — passed away at an early age or had an unnatural death.
The ritual is based on a detailed study of one's horoscope. If defects of Pitru Dosha exist, the Pitru Dosha Parihara ritual is advised.
