Ravana leaves for Lanka with athmalinga, the same time lord Vishnu passes by Gokarna and wishes to place athmalinga in Gokarna. Suddenly Vishnu covers Sun with his Sudarshana Chakra and it becomes dark as evening and becomes the reason for placing athmalinga in Rudragaya.
The place from where lord Vishnu covered the sun is considered as Lord Vishnu’s presence and is worshipped. This is also called Baskar temple as when Gokarna temple went underwater on tsunami Lord Vishnu prayed lord Sun from the same place to withdraw water and save the temple. Pleased lord Sun takes all the water to the sea and saves the temple.
